Animal Husbandry and Veterinary

The two contributory factors that made National Commission on Agriculture identify the promising potentialities of Animal Husbandry in North Eastern Region, included its ecologic condition and dietary habits of the people in North East Region.

However, due to faulty breeding, feeding, and management practices, the quality of cattle and other livestock was below the expected standards. The indigenous poultry was also inferior in quality producing 70 eggs per annum. The local pigs were also small in size and their rate of growth with their feed conversion capacity were below par.

To improve the quality of the local stock the NEC had set up farms for breeding superior stock to serve the entire region. For improving the production of fodder, initially, 2 fodder seed production farms had been established - one in Tripura and the other one in Arunachal Pradesh.
